Reality TV shows are known for giving us lots of drama. We tune in every week to hear sassy lines, gorgeous outfits, and GIF-worthy clapbacks. Or we tune in to cheer on our favorites and watch people totally melt down. But at the end of the day, we know the “reality” in reality TV is rarely actually reality. Many of the shows are scripted or at least highly edited ; meaning most of the things we see on those shows is most likely fake. But sometimes, our favorite stars surprise us. They take all that drama and all those tears and turn it into something that changes their life: a real romance! It’s always fun to see two people fall in love on a show when they didn’t intend to fall in love.

That was the concept behind EX-treme Dating —effectively increasing the awkwardness of the blind date tenfold. An unlucky dating and woman were paired to go reality whilst their former dating chatted via earpiece, guiding the conversation and live-narrating the interaction. Really, how could it go wrong? Also known as the story shows my life, The 5th Wheel featured a double date with one extraneous factor: another human. The latest addition to television’s armoury of shows that matchmake members of the public for the enjoyment of the viewing millions is Sing Date — a new show based on online karaoke. Commissioned by Sky Living, the most shocking aspect of this idea isn’t that a broadcaster thinks that people would want to watch what sounds like a hideous mixture of Glee, Don’t Forget the Lyrics and Chatroulette, but that it thinks there’s still room in the overcrowded dating market for more programmes.
Sing Date will be elbowing for room with Take Me Out a show that’s managed to capture the public’s imagination despite the procession of tabloid-baiting wrong’uns who keep appearing as contestants , The Love Machine, where couples are matched purely on their physical appearance and willingness to share breathing space with Chris Moyles, and BBC Three’s weirdly macho World Series of Dating.
But despite all this competition, it’s not unrealistic to imagine that Sing Date will be a success. Viewers can’t seem to get enough of dating shows at the moment. No amount is too many. Done well — or even sometimes done awfully — dating shows are proving irresistible for all involved. Producers like making dating shows because they’re relatively cheap to make and, once the format has been ironed out, it’s easy to churn them out with little stress.
Contestants like starring in dating shows because it can fulfill their long-held desire to go on a budget mini-break in Majorca with a preening tossbag who’s just desperate to get on the telly. And then there are the viewers, who enjoy watching dating shows because they offer a heightened level of participation. Just as pub quiz bores enjoy shouting out the answers on Mastermind, dating show audiences almost involuntarily start joining in.

Yes, they were given bathroom breaks, but only for washing off the indignity of being on Chains of Love. Sound ridiculous? It was. But this mechanical parade of cartoonish bachelors among them, a man who did turkey calls was surprisingly watchable when taken as the joke we truly hope it was meant to be. With the same awkwardness of blind dates caught on camera and snarky pop-up video comments running along the bottom of the screen, the show transformed itself from quirky to shameful.

A lot of reality television is salacious, exploitative and celebratory of violent, abusive and predatory behavior — ” Here Comes Honey Boo Boo ” and ” Love and Hip Hop ” immediately come to mind.
And yet some of it isn’t. You’ve got your makeover shows, game shows, dating shows and, of course, talent shows like ” American Idol ” and ” Dancing With the Stars ,” which have garnered tremendous ratings for networks. Meanwhile the soap opera genre, which made its way from radio to television and lasted for decades, has been all but obliterated by the daytime talk shows that give “regular people” their 15 minutes of fame.
These days it seems that anything can pass for entertainment, from folks getting parking tickets, to wealthy “housewives” who aren’t really that wealthy drinking too much, to “basketball wives” some of whom aren’t wives going on shopping sprees. Some shows even feature celebrities wishing to pursue “love,” although what is more readily apparent is their wish to pursue a second chance at fame.
The surplus of reality television is not perplexing or deep — it’s simple economics. Most reality programming is cheap to produce and yields maximum ratings that can be leveraged to the hilt with advertising agencies.

In , four high-profile, well-loved female queer TV characters were killed off in a period of only 30 days. To see a widely loved, trans-led, highly diverse, and genuinely high-quality show cancelled without reason was heartbreaking, leaving queer fans like me without the satisfying endings that we deserved; we were left only with uncertainty and rejection.
In light of the queer deaths on TV in , the anger that persisted among fans online was justified. For teens who grow up yearning for queer representation and almost never see it fully realized, trying to find footing within your own queer identity is difficult.
